5 Basic Shawl Shapes

1. Square

8 increases every other row.

ROW 1: ✽K1, yo, rep. from ✽ to last st, k1.
ROW 2: K across.
Rep. ROWS 1 & 2 once more.
ROW 5: ✽(K1, yo) twice, pm, rep. from ✽ twice more, (k1, yo) twice, k1.
ROW 6: K across.
ROW 7: K1, yo, ✽k to marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, rep. from ✽ twice more, k to last st, yo. k1
Rep. ROWS 6 & 7 until shawl is desired length.

2. Circular

8 increases every 4th row 3. Triangular

ROW 1: ✽K1, yo, rep. from ✽ to last st, k1.
ROW 2: K across.
Rep. ROWS 1 & 2 once more.
ROW 5: ✽(K1, yo) twice, pm, rep. from ✽ twice more, (k1, yo) twice, k1.
ROW 6, 7 & 8: K across.
ROW 9: K1, yo, ✽k to marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, rep. from ✽ twice more, k to last st, yo, k1

Rep. ROWS 6-9 until shawl is desired length.

3.Triangular

4 increases every other row.

ROW 1: ✽K1, yo, rep. from ✽ to last st, k1.
ROW 2: K across.
ROW 3: (K1, yo) twice, pm, (k1, yo) twice, k1.
ROW 4: K across.
ROW 5: K1, yo, k to marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, k to last st, yo, k1

Rep. ROWS 4 & 5 until shawl is desired length.

4. Semi-Circlar

6 increases every 4th row.


ROW 1: ✽K1, yo, rep. from ✽ to last st, k1.
ROW 2: K across.
ROW 3: K1, yo, k to last st, yo, k1.
ROW 4: K across.
ROW 5: ✽(K1, yo) twice, pm, rep. from ✽ once more, (k1, yo) twice, k1.
ROW 6, 7 & 8: Knit across.

5 Heart-shaped

6 increases every other row

ROW 1: ✽K1, yo, rep. from ✽ to last st, k1.
ROW 2: K across.
Rep. ROWS 1 & 2 once more.
ROW 5: (K1, yo) twice, k2, yo, pm, k1, yo, k2, (yo, k1) twice.
ROW 6: K across.
ROW 7: (K1, yo) twice, k to marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, k to last 2 sts, (yo, k1) twice.

I have to try this method of increasing for a circular shawl. I would like to avoid the stretched rounds I get with a pi shawl pattern. Thank you for sharing!

I'm not into shawls - too cold here in winter and too warm in summer................ but, this is a very interesting post that can be converted to other things other than shawls - thanks for posting............:)
