Solution: How to cover handles of jewellery pliers

Edited by anniekins at 2022-12-13 07:49

A few days ago I asked if any of us had an idea how to cover the handles of jewellery pliers.
As I was getting more and more allergic to the plastic covers everyday.
Many of you gave a possible solution. Even medical.
That felt so very good as I was getting a bit hopeless...

So the plastic didn't want to come off.The factory melted / dipped the plastic fully around the thin handle.
Thank you everyone who came up with possible solutions on this.
:D Some of you really thougth outside the box!

Here is the end result of some trial & error.
The best solution for me is to cover the handles up with a piece of cotton knitted fabric.
The first piece is finding out the right measurements. But after that it's a piece of cake :)

The first idea was to knit a piece using a French Knitter with 6 pins.
See picture: That result was not as good as knitting a piece on 2 standard needles.

The knitted piece: Needles 2,5 mm. Cast on 19 stitches. Knit pearl or whatever for 13 rows. Cast off.
See photo.

And voilá, you sew it onto the handles with a few simple stitches. And then the pliers look like new.
Ah well in my case the pliers look ;P like a bunch of yellow bananas!
But the cotton grip is a fantastic feeling.
Even without the allergy I should have done this a long time ago: the grip is better and feels more 'organic'.
And the look of that yellow color is fun too and fits the colours of my studio now.

Hope you enjoyed my little report.
:) Thanks again for all your great ideas & suggestions!!!

This knitting stitch is called 'Moss stitch' (Dutch: gerstekorrelsteek).

Wonderful solution,I had to do something similar to the metallic legs of a little table that I put on my sofa, and could scratch and rip the leather, but I did it with crochet.
The color of your handles now are stunnig! You wont lose them easily!!
Congratulations and regards!!

I might need to do this to all my pliers and probably my crochet hooks as well. You know what, even pens! Not allergy related here, but I tend to get a very hard grip on things I'm working with and that eventually hurt the tips of my fingers. This will probably help quite a bit!

Nice solution to a tricky problem.Hope you're not getting any more reaction. It's always a bummer when you have to stop doing a craft because your body somehow objects to what you are doing.

They look cute! Do you find they slip or move around when you use the pliers?
