OK, this is too bad. I don't know how to read the chart of TG479, Istanbul

Sheet 7b1.jpg
1. What does "2X" mean here? Does it mean I need to use 2 strands instead of one? (as one strand is used throughout the pattern)
2. The triple arrow....I am completely lost.....can't even have a guess..

Sheet 7b.jpg

Also another related issue is how to identify the backstitch color? There are so many color symbol at the bottom, and so many arrows. I don't know which points to where. Really this is like solving a math problem...(Well, I hate maths....)

It's such a good design. Would be so nice to have it in the living room. What a shame...:'(

I have several of TG's city patterns, some in kits and some just patterns.  I too have noticed and realized the intricacy of her charts AND the backstitching.

I wish she would do the BS (backstitching) like normal. It won't make the design any easier to stitch, but it would cut down on the time stitching it!
I've been stitching for over 45 years now (damn!  I'm getting old!  LOL) and I've stitched small, medium, large and gigantic designs.  I'm currently working on a piece for my granddaughter and now that it's coming on winter here (joy joy----lots of pain for me) I will pull out my Sistine Chapel piece. It's 42" high by 96" long.  Before THAT design, the largest I'd stitched was 3' high x 4.5' long.  It was the Nativity Scene and was done in 5 panels.
After my husband died (on Christmas 2013, in our house and in my arms) I was cleaning out the house, and I found the pattern set for the Nativity Scene along with the ceramic nativity set we'd bought in 96!!  So, I'll be stitching a new Nativity Scene and painting the ceramic one soon!!!

Hi there Chouchou,  I will have a look at the chart in the morning, it is 1am and I am in bed with my iPad so a bit awrkward at the moment.  I will help you out when I have the original chart in front of me.  I know the charts can take a little working out as I have completed London earlier this year, which is frame and hanging on my lounge wall.  Be in touch real soon Langstep

Thanks langstep. You are very kind!

Have looked at the original chart - x2 does mean 2 threads they are in white.
The little symbol in front of the arrows shows the colour of thread for the backstitching and the arrows are below or beside the area to be stitched in that colour.
The longer arrow means the areas higher up the page - unless there is an arrow at the top or side pointing down.

The arrow nearest the back stitching is the colour to stitch that area.

Page 6 - 3 arrows in colour 3799 dark grey - the x's and balcony on building 2
Page 7 - 3 arrows in colour 975 brown - tree branches/

Hope this helps.  Any other question please ask, I am happy to help if possible.

Thea Gouverneur 's larger designs are probably not recommended for beginners as they have many colours, lots of one and two stitches in a colour and the charts is over many pages.
They do take a bit of looking at the sort out the symbols and instructions for backstitching, but they are well worth the effort as they are beautiful designs.
I love the Cities and Egyptian series.
